Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is a type of therapy that’s recommended for some people with complex trauma or PTSD. It focuses on traumatic memories and aims to help you process and heal from them by moving your eyes – similar to how your body processes memories during the REM stage of sleep.

As with any kind of mental health therapy, some people may need much fewer or many more sessions than others to feel ‘healed’ from their trauma, and some people might find that it isn’t effective for them. However, many EMDR patients who struggled with traumatic memories do report feeling more equipped to deal with them after visiting a therapist.

EMDR can sometimes involve making eye movements from side to side, listening to a bilateral track through headphones, or even tapping each side of your body. Whatever method you use, the aim is to reprocess your traumatic or problematic memories and help you react better to them.

EMDR therapy for PTSD and trauma

One of the reasons EMDR is more successful for trauma and PTSD than depression and anxiety is because of the way it helps our brain sort those memories in our brain. Usually, this happens while we’re sleeping. But traumatic events can stop this process or cause certain things to get ‘stuck in the system’.

EMDR therapy for PTSD helps restart the sorting process while helping you reframe negative or traumatic thoughts with more positive or neutral ones to rewire how you feel about yourself and in general.

EMDR on NHS

EMDR therapy is available on the NHS, but waiting lists are at a record high, and can be up to or over 42 weeks in some parts of the UK.

When you’re struggling with a PTSD episode, you can’t wait weeks to see someone about it, let alone months or more than a year. We’re happy to see any patients even if you’re already on an NHS waiting list for EMDR.

EMDR therapy cost

Private EMDR therapy costs slightly more than other talking therapies like counselling or CBT, but many patients report fantastic outcomes.

Most private therapists charge between £80-120 for a 60-minute EMDR appointment, but at Ready Health, you can book a session for the same amount of time for just £??.

Block booking 10 or more sessions gives you a discount of ?% for affordable EMDR therapy local to you.

No, you don’t need a GP referral to see one of our specialist EMDR therapists. Nobody knows you own mental health better than you do, so if you’d like to see if EMDR works for you, please book a 60-minute slot via our appointment portal.

During your first session, your therapist will talk to you about your current symptoms, background and history so they can get a clear picture on how to help you best.
