Cholera Vaccine
Cholera is an infection that comes from eating or drinking unclean food or water. It’s highly contagious and often found in areas where there’s little access to clean water.
Thankfully, we aren’t at risk of it in the UK, but travellers to other countries might need to seek protection from Cholera before they depart so they stay safe overseas.
Cholera oral vaccine
The Cholera vaccine is slightly different to others you might be used to as it’s given orally.
You should take two doses before you’re due to travel, between 1 & 4 weeks apart from each other. You should take your last dose at least a week before you leave.
Cholera prevention for travellers
You can prevent cholera in other ways as well as being vaccinated against it, such as only drinking from sealed, bottled water, avoiding food that may be unclean or contaminated, and sanitising your hands if you think you’ve been in contact with someone who’s infected.
Some foods are more likely than others to carry the bacteria, such as shellfish or creatures that are likely to have been exposed to contaminated water.

cholera vaccine Faq's
Once you’re vaccinated against cholera, it should protect you for up to 2 years. If you’re travelling to an at-risk area again after this amount of time, you might need another vaccine course to stay protected.
Some people might experience side effects after taking the Cholera immunisation drink, but these are normally mild and short-lived. Symptoms that affect up to 1 in 100 people include:
- Diarrhoea
- Stomach discomfort
- Headaches
Less common side effects might also include
- Nausea
- Slight temperature
- Dizziness
- Generally feeling unwell
You should be able to manage these symptoms at home with paracetamol or ibuprofen.
Most countries that are at risk of cholera outbreaks are across Africa and parts of Asia, as well as places like Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
If you’re not sure whether you’ll be in an area exposed to cholera on your trip, you can visit the NHS Fit for Travel website, or make an appointment with one of our travel health clinicians who’ll be able to advise you on a full list of vaccinations for your itinerary.
