Vasectomy

Having a vasectomy means your sperm supply will be cut off from your semen, making it more than 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. It’s a permanent method of male contraception, and the procedure takes place in-clinic with one of our experienced doctors.

Vasectomy Faqs

During your appointment, the doctor will use a local anaesthetic on your scrotum to numb the area so you shouldn’t be able to feel anything.
Once that’s kicked in, they’ll make a small incision to seal off each sperm duct, and close the wound all within half an hour.

The procedure itself shouldn’t be painful thanks to the anaesthetic, but many people do experience pain or discomfort for up to a couple of weeks afterwards.

Of course. Sex should still be just as pleasurable once you’ve healed from a vasectomy, and you’ll still be able to get an reaction, orgasm and ejaculate as normal. The only difference is your semen won’t contain any sperm and can’t get anybody pregnant.

While the procedure is quick, a vasectomy only starts being effective from around 3 months after your appointment.
It takes around this amount of time for any remaining sperm to clear out of your semen. A sperm test should be able to confirm whether there are any left when you ejaculate.
We would always recommend using additional contraception until your vasectomy becomes effective

A vasectomy can only protect against pregnancy, not any sexually transmitted infections. You can still get and pass on an STI if you don’t use barrier contraceptives like condoms.
If you think you might have an STI, it’s a good idea to get tested before having sex again.

Vasectomies can sometimes be reversed, but there’s never a guarantee it’ll work.
We recommend that anyone booking this procedure is fully aware that it’s intended to be a permanent method of contraception, and to be sure that they don’t want any more biological children.

You shouldn’t drive yourself home after having a vasectomy. Please make sure you have a way of getting back either by public transport or by getting a lift with friends or family.
